Model interview with Veerle Soeters

July 9, 2018 by Modellist-ID

Even though she hasn’t been in the modeling industry for that long, the gorgeous Veerle Soeters has already done some great jobs for different brands, and she’s also a girl with a lot of humor. This interview will definitely make you smile.

Nationality: Dutch
Agencies: Touchémodels
Milestones: Glamour, Nigel Barker, Prima donna add-on posters everywhere in the Netherlands
Current location: Amsterdam

You were one of the participants of Curvy Supermodel in the Netherlands, what was your best experience during that show?
I didn’t do modeling before the show, so for me, the best experience during the show was actually after the show. Because then I realized that I wanted to become a model. I think during the show my best experience was the shoot with Nigel Barker. Because I didn’t have any experience at all it was a bit scary for me to do my first shoots on national TV, also because I didn’t really see myself as a model yet. And during the shoot with Nigel Barker, I felt the most comfortable and into the moment. After that, I said to Danielle: I felt like a model for the first time. So I think that was my best experience.

When did you know that you wanted to be a professional model?
When I came home. During the show, there was so much going on that I didn’t prepare myself for (my friend signed me in, and I just went with the idea of well we’ve got nothing to lose so just go and find out if you like it or not). So you can imagine that when I was actually in the show I had no idea what was going on haha. Besides the modeling, making TV is a whole other thing. During the show, I couldn’t really set the two of them apart, so it wasn’t really my thing. After the show, when I went home and could relax for a bit, I thought back on it and realized that I really liked the actual jobs we got, just not the part of making a TV show. Throwing myself in the deep by participating without having any clue was a big risk, but now I’m really happy I did. Not because the I think the TV show was the best thing for me, but afterward I found something that I really like and want to do for the rest of my life. Or at least until I get too old haha.

Veerle Soeters

When did you first sign with an agency and what was that like?
I got a lot of offers from agencies and I didn’t really know what was the best choice for me. So I decided to go to all the agencies that I thought would fit me, and just go with the one that felt the best to me. It took me a while, haha, but my first choice was Touchémodels. I just went there last week and I was so happy when I walked out. It felt like the right agency for me and there weren’t any doubts like I had with the other agencies. I screamed like an 8 years old girl who just got to touch a pony for the first time when they called me that afternoon to tell me that they wanted me too. So there I was, on the beach, screaming about how happy I was, surrounded by 150 other people who came there to enjoy the peace haha. I already called my friends and family after the go-see to tell them how much I wanted it, so when I was done doing my happy dance with my girls on the beach, I called them to scream some more.

Okay so I sound like a very extra person now, but I’m someone who always goes with her feelings. So when the agency where I had the best feeling about called me with the good news, I just knew that I made the right choice after doubting for a couple of weeks about what I should do. Your agency basically decides what’s going to happen with your career for a big part. They promote you, send you the brands that they think might fit you, they make sure that you get to work in the right conditions etc. So I think it is important to find an agency where you get the feeling that they are really going to do their best for you, and put in the same energy as you are going to do. That’s why I was so happy because I knew this was going to be the start of my career, and now I have a great team to do that with.

What is one of your favorite photographs from your career so far? Who shot it?
That’s difficult. I like my first shot for the Glamour because I have absolutely no makeup on so I can see myself in the picture, but it isn’t my best facial expression. I like the photo from Prima Donna because the campaign was in almost every city in the Netherlands, and even in Paris.

Veerle Soeters

What is your best model experience ever?
I think It still has to come. Don’t really have anything yet that I would set as a milestone for my career. Want to do way more and bigger things that I’ve done

What are the main challenges in modeling today?
I think it’s pretty obvious what the main challenge is for a Curvy model. (I call it curvy because it sounds way better than plus-size since I’m the regular sized woman). But the main struggle is that not all brands have their sample sizes in a size 12, or they just aren’t open to curvy models.

Veerle Soeters What do you enjoy most of the model life?
I think my biggest nightmare in life is that I end up having a 9 to 5 job, that I have to do the same thing over and over again every day, no surprises, no creativity, just routine. And not the kind of “I like to drink my favorite cup of thee every morning” routine, but the “ I get out to bed, to a job where I know exectly what to expect and what to do, because I’ve been doing it for 25 years now, before I go home I say goodbye to my boss who hates his job even more than I do, and then I come home, cook, what’s a sad movie about cats because I don’t actually want one, go to sleep, and wake-up to do the exact same thing” kind off routine.

The thing I like about modeling is that it is never the same. Yes, you go there and take pictures or walk for a bit, if you want to put it really black and white. But every job has another vision and wants another end result. You can put in your creativity with the rest of the team, and because the team changes a lot, you can learn a lot from other people’s way of thinking. You work in different places, with different people, on different ideas. And that’s what I like, that it’s different every time and in that way, you can develop different every time.

Do you think models are able to find long lasting friendships within the industry today?
Yes, I think so. Nobody will understand you better than someone who’s in the same industry. Sadly, in the industry, some people think that they can only be the best when others are below them, and that’s how they act. They will bring you down if they think it can get them up. Sooner or later, they will find out that that isn’t how it works in the long term. Being a model is more than just being a pretty face, people do have to like you if they want to work with you, or want to work with you again, or bring you to their events, or into their network. Things go around pretty fast in this industry, so if you can’t be trusted by people see you as a bad person, it will take you down in the end. Just takes a while for people to see it, but they will. So I’m very aware of the fact that you can’t trust everybody in the industry, but I do have a couple of friends who are in the industry and are my biggest support in it. Like I said, my friends who aren’t in this, don’t know the feeling of being in this. That’s why it’s great if you can find someone in the same industry who is honest with you, who supports and helps you, and is actually glad for you when you accomplish something great. One of my best friends was in the TV show with me, and we just go great together. She helps me with everything and I do the same for her, but this only works because we aren’t jealous of each other. And we are truly happy for each other when getting big opportunities. But in the end, that’s how every friendship should be.

Veerle Soeters What is your big model dream?
My big model dream is to work internationally. I would love work in Paris because they are still very into the regular sized models. So working in Paris would mean that the world gets ’s more open to other sizes. I would also love to work in Capetown because they have a lot of sporty shoots there. So in that way, it would be a symbol that Curvy models don’t eat pizza all day and lay in bed. We do train a lot and need to watch what we eat, you should be the healthy kind of curvy. My big model dream isn’t something like a Victory secret show for curvy models. I would rather walk the normal Victory secret show because I would like the see that we get chosen based on how we work and what we deliver rather than on what our sizes are. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think there is anything wrong with the Victory secret show the way it is now, the models train really hard to look that way so I admire their effort. But my point is that I would like the boxes to disappear.
Oh, and I would also love to work for brands like Tommy Hilfiger, just because I love their collections.

What is your favorite thing to do when not working?
How cliché as this sounds when I’m not working I love to spend time with my friends and family haha. Ok, I also train when I’m not working etc, but that’s not my favorite thing. My friends and family are my biggest support and I love being with them, they get me and have the same humor, so they always make me laugh. What we mostly do is sitting on the terrace, go to a festival, going out, go for dinner, cook together, or just lay in the couch watching movies. Wine and cheese are very important when we get together.

Take us through a typical day in the life of Veerle?
I’m at the end of my study now so I’m pretty busy with that from Monday until Friday. But I wake up kind of early, around 07:00, 0800 on a good day. (I have a lot of energy and don’t need much sleep) I’m pretty slow in the morning, I’m not a stressed out person so I take me to do things. Could set my alarm 2 hours later and be in a hurry, but that’s not really my thing. Then I eat my avocado every morning because that’s another thing in life that makes me happy, avocados. Then I spend as much time as possible with my music on, just really old music that your parents would listen to. And then I’m all ready to go to my internship, a shoot or the gym. When I’m done with that go do something with my friends, roommates or family. Oh, and on Sunday morning I do everything I hate, finances and stuff.

How do you keep your body in good shape?
I train 4 or 5 times a week, depends on how much time I have, and If I really have a shitty week and I know a workout isn’t what I need at that moment, I go 3 times. Next, to that, I eat healthily, and by healthy I mean as much as possible natural food. Good carbs, good fats, a lot of veggies and fruit. And I try not to eat so much processed food. Doesn’t mean I never eat a bag of chips and a chocolate bar afterward, it happens once in a while.

What’s your favorite place in the world?
I have never been there but I really, really, really want to go to Hawaii. I love the beaches, the nature, and the mindset of the people. And no this isn’t based on Lilo & Stitch. I did some pretty intense research since I was planning on moving there for having a year for my study. But guess at what timing the Curvy super model programme started? Yes, indeed, in the same period I was about to go to Hawaii. But never stop dreaming, they say.

Give us 5 fun facts people might not know about you yet.
–      The other reason that I want to go to Hawaii is because I want to surf to badly.
–      I’m very sarcastic and that’s why people often think that I’m a bit hard at first, but I’m actually very sensitive. Just have a bit of a weird sense of humor I guess, yet humor is the thing that makes me connect with people, or not.
–      When most kids got dogs when they were little, my parents got me and my brother rats. They were the best tho.
–      I always put stubborn on my CV and describe it as one of my best qualities. It works tho because I believe it can be a positive thing to not follow the crowd. You just have to see it in another way
–      Can’t think of a last one, sorry!

What do you think MODELLIST-ID can do for the model community?
The thing that I found interesting in the video is that models help each other. So it helps other models to know where they should go in a different country and stuff. Sharing your experience can help others.

Do you have any model friend you would like to see presented on Modellist-ID?
Yes! Terry Groenen! Besides the fact that she is gorgeous, she has a platform for models who are not skinny enough or not big enough. It is really hard for young girls to hear that they are to fat of that they need to gain weight. I know every job has requirements, but her message is really good.

Where can we follow you?
I only work on Instagram! @veerlesoeters
