Tell us about your career as a model. How did you get started?
I started my model career very young. I was 10 years old when I got into kids modeling in Germany, it was fun.I always was playing dress up, I sang around the house, did fashion shows for my parents and family ….so you can say I was born with it. it was all Catalogue,  but one day I did a test Shoot with one of the photographers from the Catalogue I was shooting for a lot as a kid , very Calvin Klein looking, and a few weeks later my parents got a phone call, John Casablanca’s, founder of Elite Models wants to meet me as he will be in Germany. So we met him and got signed on the spot, at 11 Years old. This was the mid-nineties, so I was on board with all the Top Models.  …..->

When did you first sign with an agency and what was that like?
……..- > I was thrilled, but there wasn’t much work at that point for an 11-year-old at an agency that represented all the very Top Models of that decade. So I just continued school, doing a few shots here and there. Traveling was also not possible, my parents had normal jobs and I was simply too young to go alone. So my grown-up career didn’t start till I was about 16, first I was sent to smaller markets to build my book, Cape Town, Athens, Barcelona ! after that I  got signed with IMG Worldwide, lived in London, Paris and then eventually moved to NYC! My career had a lot of ups, and down. I thought at 21 I was going to be done / old/ not relevant, the truth was however that at 22 I started really making money with modeling! So Life has shown me differently, I am thankful.

What is one of your favorite photographs from your career so far? Who shot it?
I once got the honor to shoot the classic Paolo Roversi Polaroids in his atelier in Paris, he was so chill and patient, I was 16! Apart from that, I shot an underwear campaign with Mark Seliger in Paris, my co-model was a Boa Constricta! I looked like “EVE”, that was fun and a bit scary! I also traveled to Bora Bora with the dream team of Fashion Canada Magazine to shoot the main Editorial with Gabor Jurina, on the other exotic flip side I did a shoot while back with Serge Leblon for Jalouse Magazine in Mongolia!!!! that was something!!!! we stayed with real Nomads in the middle of nowhere, simply incredible!

What are the main challenges in modeling today?
The main challenges nowadays are that unfortunately clients and jobs don’t pay as much as they used to, cutting corners everywhere, whiles the work amount is still the same, if not more. For instance, a job that would usually have to be shoot in a 2day booking is now being squeezed into a very hectic and straining 1-day shoot. Which means the workload is still the same and you are supposed to perform like a speed athlete to make it look still as good as possible.

A lot of jobs go unrecognizable, which means the head gets cut off. Pretty cruel and I am not sure how that relates to the Consumer either. Through that tactic the clients “safe”, by paying less than the half of the average daily rate.

Another big challenge is that there is no transparency when it comes to payment. Agencies are supposed to collect the money you have made of a job within a 90 day grace period for the client. That is already really long. Unfortunately a lot of clients, I am sad to say, don’t even pay within that time frame, whiles already using the images of the shoot. This creates a lot of problems for the models. We are asked to be ‘patient’ when no other bill collector is ‘patient’. I personally have had clients be so happy on set, the pictures are used and I still wait for my money… some over a year. That needs to change ASAP! In any other job, you get paid on time, within  2 weeks or every month. Why not Models???

California just passed a bill that Models need to be paid the day of, I strongly hope that will come to NY state soon and really, ALL over the World! We work extremely hard for our money and have bills & Taxes to pay just like everyone else!

What do you enjoy most of your profession?
I enjoy meeting new people, getting to create the image, see myself being transformed and play out the role. And no day is like the other!

How would you describe a model life?
You have to be extremely flexible, stay positive, even though rejection is a daily thing, take good care of yourself

Do you think models are able to find long lasting friendships within the industry today?
I have made some great long lasting friendships through Modeling. it is a job, so when on set, it is mostly professional, but I have had the luck to really click with some people, that are to this day, my best friends:)
What is your big model dream?

I want to book a big Perfume Campaign, one of those that will run for years and be iconic.

What is your favorite thing to do when not working?
I play music in my Band Radiant Reveries, which is the perfect balance for me! It’s not about how I look, but how we sound! Music heals the soul!

Take us through a typical day in the life of Karolina?
If I don’t have a shoot booked, I usually don’t wake up too early, am more of a night owl.

There is usually some castings to plan my day, so the juggle begins, But first breakfast and Tea as well as writing in my journal. then I schedule my exercise for the day & then I get out into the world. When I am done with all of that, there is usually music rehearsal or I work on lyrics and song bits at home on my guitar. In the evening we like to have friends over or go see Movies with my husband.

How do you keep your body in good shape?
I do Yoga, Pilates Reformer and jog when it’s not too cold. I also walk a lot.
