Lipmania – By Makeup Artist Cristina Vila

There’s nothing more sensual that a gorgeous mouth. But the same way there is a thousand different ways to say “I love you”, there are also infinite ways to color your lips. The possibilities go from subtle and nude, to intense, matte, sparkling, glossy, stained or even two-toned lips.

With infinite textures and color combinations it may seems difficult to find the one that suits you the most, but believe that once you have, you’ll have the most sensual, desirable mouth ever.

But before you start trying a million different lipsticks, you should know that if makeup sits and looks better on well-maintained skin, the same concept applies for your lips.

To avoid dry flakes and make sure that they are baby soft, you should exfoliate them about once or twice a week or before you are going for a bold, intense colour.

Usually, scrubs designed to be used on the face can be too harsh on the lips, which is why there are scrubs specifically designed for the lips, much gentler on the super thin layer of skin that covers them.

Some great lip exfoliators to try are: Bliss Fabulips Sugar Lips Scrub, which also nourishes your lips with vitamins, shea and cocoa butters, Clarins Doux Exfoliant Levres et Contour, with firming properties for both the lips and contour, Philosohpy Kiss me Lip Scrub with subtle, tingling mint aroma.

To lock on moisture, never forget to  apply a generous layer of a really good lip balm.

Try the Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Intensive Lip Repair Balm for really dry lips or Bobbi Brown Lip Balm SPF 15 to nourish your lips while keeping them protected from the damaging UVA aging effects.

If you prefer a natural, non-glossy finish you should try Kielh’s Facial Fuel No-Shine Moisturizing Lip Balm, which will leave your mouth irresistibly moisturized without a hint of shine but if you’re more on the colour side, you should go for Rosebud Salve, an absolute cult favorite which plums up your lips while giving them a flattering but subtle colour.

Now that you have the softest lips ever, you can start to colour your day in any possible way you desire.

No matter which mood you’re in or which result you’re going to, here you’ll find all the different products to help you achieve it.

For those days in which you go for the no-makeup look or if you want to pair a beautiful smokey eye with a nude lip, you can either use a nude shade of lipstick or even just a touch of concealer to tone down the natural pink hue of your lips.

If you go for the first option you should try Tom Ford Lip Color in Nude Vanille, Bobbi Brown Lip Colour in Carnation or Mac Lipstick in Spice. If you prefer the second option, you can either use some of your usual concealer or Nars Radiant Creamy Concealer, which comes with the same sponge applicator as most lip glosses.

Now that the spring is exploding in colour you may feel like adding some of that happiness to your lips, but after such a long winter you may be a little skeptical about really bright shades.

In that case, you can try a sheer lipstick, like YSL Volupté Sheer Candy, a soft lip pen like Clinique Chubby Sticks and Dior Jelly Lip Pen, both combining subtle, juicy colour with a moisturizing texture, or, if you’re in a hurry, just add a thin layer of gloss. With the Nars Lips Glosses you’ll have a thousand shades to choose from!

For when the night comes and you feel like a seducing diva your best partner in crime will be a highly pigmented lipstick.

No matter whether you’re a classic lady looking for the perfect red lip or if you’re a more mysterious woman that prefers a deep, burgundy mouth you should always look for a long lasting texture that keeps you away from constant retouching.

Estee Lauder Pure Color Long Lasting Lipstick comes in a vivid spectrum of faithful shades to choose from, but if you’re going for the classic red lip I recommend Mac Lipstick in Ruby Woo, a matte red that’s Dita von Teese’s favourite (and mine!).

For really long-lasting colour there’s nothing like a lip stain and when it comes to lip stains there’s nothing like YSL Rouge Pur Couture Vernis À Lèvres Glossy Stain. It will stay with you no matter what, even through dinner as long as you avoid oily food.

Ok, so you’ve been looking at the beauty trends coming directly from the runway and now you’re wondering where to find such a bright lip colour?

Mac Lipmix and OCC Lip Tar come in a wide selection of bright shades that have been specifically designed to facilitate mixing up colours, allowing you to find the exact one!

The possibilities are infinite, just let your imagination take you wherever you want to! Try an ombré lip, two-toned lip or anything that comes to mind. And for extra boldness and a super modern matte finish, dab a touch of a highly pigmented powder, like Make Up for Ever Pure Pigments.

Now it is up to you to play with colour and allow your lips to express more than your own words. Don’t let anything stop you!
