Balint Nemes Model Manager

Hungarian model manager Balint Nemes on what it takes to become a successful model, current model trends and more… Read it all in this exclusive interview.

How many years have you been working in the industry and how did you start out?
About 15 years ago I started out on an in and out routine. I have also worked for other great agencies in Milan and Paris as a scout. But only 1,5 years ago I became an independent personal model manager, and I guess what: “I finally found myself”.

What type of personality must a model have? Do you consider this when looking at a new model?
One of the key features a model should have is personality. I consider this as the most important aspect of a model! I was reading a great book of Taschen about the 100 best fashion designers of the world. The question they all got how they would describe a beautiful person? Most of the answers was that they focused on the inner personality and not so much on the outlook.

Do you immediately see if someone is suitable to become a model?
Yes! Give me 5 seconds and I have made my final decision. Sometimes it takes a bit longer, but most of the times I know it right from the look in her eyes and their appearance.

Does the presence and influence of a model on social media networks have a significant effect on the success of a campaign?
It really depends on the marketing strategy of the brand I guess. The ones who would like to advertise their brands with celebrities, for them it is really important. The ones who do not care about the mass opinion, because they are ahead of everyone, for them it does not matter, or it is even better when the model is unknown.

What are a few of the things that you do as a model manager to help the girls you represent break into the industry?
One of the most important things is to help them understand that they hit the jackpot on the lottery of human genetics and they should not waste it. The second important thing is to help them to become a “fashion model” in which you need a different personality, attitude, style and sometimes different measurements than what they used to have before as a nice girl on the street.

What are you most proud of in your career as a model manager?
That I can see how our cooperation changed the directions of the girls to the better, not only in their modeling career but in their life too. I consider myself an artist. I create a beautiful path of life from scratch.

What advice would you give to someone who is thinking about starting a career in modeling?
Don’t think, just do it. But be smart when you are already doing it.

What would you say are the current model trends and trends going forward?
I have spent a lot of time to see what characters were successful in the past and now. I tried to figure out the future trends, but I have to tell you; not so much has changed. A lot of features, proportions and characters will always be lasting forever in the fashion/beauty industry. I think it is very versatile and changing for people outside of the industry, but for the people being in the business for quite a while, it remains the same.

What do you think about the concept of Modellist-ID? Do you think it is of great value to the models and would you advise your models to become a member?
I was amazed from the first time I saw the website, the content and the whole concept, so I would definitely advise models to become members.
