Staying confident after being rejected all the time: according to fashion model Saraya van Dreumel this is one of the biggest challenges of the modeling industry. Next to this, she talks about her agency, her love for Milan and she shares 5 fun facts about herself most people don’t know yet…
Agencies: 3MModels, Nologo (Milan)
Milestones: Going to Milan and getting 3MModels as my mother agency
Current location: Milan
First off tell us how you were discovered and how your modeling career all started?
Unfortunately, I don’t have a cool ‘I got discovered while I was walking on the street’ kind of story. I wanted to work as a model since I was young, but puberty hit me and that didn’t work in my favor. Around one and a half year ago I send my pictures to an agency in Scheveningen, they liked me but first wanted me to do a test shooting, so I did and when they got the results of that they wanted to sign me. About one month later I got a call that an agency from Milan was interested in me and that I only had to Skype with them, I don’t think I have ever been that nervous in my life. but it was the sweaty hands and shaky legs all worth when I got the call with “You’re in!!!!!” two months after that I landed in Milan.
What’s one of the most interesting shoots that you’ve done?
I have a few that were quite interesting. But I personally think that one of the most interesting shoots I have done is with Peter Orré. I adore his work because it’s super pure and natural. I did a test shooting with him when I was about 16 years old and last year again. It was so cool to see those pictures when I compared them with each other, how much I’ve changed and grown in the last couple of years.
Do you ever get shy in front of the camera?
When I just started and everything was new to me, yes pretty much but now as the time passed and I’ve got more experience not really anymore. Sometimes it still happens though, but I think it’s not more than normal.
Tell us a bit about your mother agency and what you like most about them.
I recently changed so it hasn’t been such a long time that I’ve been with 3mmodels, but so far I am super happy with them! What I like most about them is that they take good care of me and they give me good faith in my career as a model. Also the fact that even though my booker is always super busy, I would be able to reach him whenever I need him. (shout out to you Samuele!!)
What are the main challenges in modeling today?
I think for me it would be to keep staying confident about myself, when I was younger I never was super secure and in this world there are so many (more) beautiful, taller and younger girls than me. The challenge is to stay positive through all the rejections we get, and to not take it too personal.
Do you get to travel a lot for your work? If so what’s your favorite city that you have visited?
Pretty much yes, especially when I think about the fact that when I started about one year ago I only had been in an airplane twice and at this moment I think I am close to 40 times.
My number one is absolute Milan, but I also saw Berlin once at night, which was amazing so that’s a really strong second place. Oh and not to forget, when I was working in Jakarta I had one week off, so I went with my roommate to Bali it was like a paradise!
Where is home for you and why?
Definitely in Milan, I fell in love with the city, it feels so comfortable for me to be there even though my family and friends aren’t living there, they still feel close and I can easily go visit them and they me. Oh and the weather, it’s so much better than the Netherlands.
What gets you out of bed in the morning?
What is your favorite healthy snack?
Blueberries or strawberries. Oh and melon, I love melon, it doesn’t really matter which kind.
What’s your beauty regimen like?
I always remove my makeup before I go to bed and when I don’t have to I don’t wear makeup, on those moments I only use day cream from Clinique with SPF to give my skin a good protection and Vaseline for my lips to keep them smooth.
Give us 5 facts about you people may not know.
– I make really good jokes even though 9 out of 10 times I’m the only one laughing about them.
– I can be super sarcastic (and you probably won’t even notice)
– That I’m actually not really a morning person even though I almost always get up around 6/7 but you really shouldn’t talk to me and I you can without being attacked, I really like you.
– I’m always hungry even if I say I’m not, that’s me trying to strongly convince myself to stick to my diet.
– When I go out for diner, I always have a hard time choosing what I want, so the person who goes with me will end up sharing his/hers plate with me.
If you weren’t modeling what would you see yourself doing?
I would probably be living the fulltime student life.
