Tell us about your career as a model. How did you get started?
I just turned 15 when I went shopping with friends in Amsterdam. It was our first time ‘’alone’’ in Amsterdam (without our parents). One of the first stops was the Bijenkorf (department store) where I got scouted by my current booker. My friends got all excited and I immediately called my mom who wasn’t as excited. More sceptic. She first wanted to do some research on the agency (House of orange). After my mom has always been supportive, as I was so young my mom has almost been my manager, she received the e-mails with booking info and did my administration too. She also never wanted to let her fears get in the way of my ‘’luck’’. I can remember I was 15 and got asked if was able to shoot overseas, I immediately said yes but was less excited when I heard my mom couldn’t come with cause of work. She said it would be good to experience this alone as more work overseas would follow. Luckily everything is always good arranged, so I was able to do this on my own at a very young age and got really independent. I worked a lot besides my high school, after I went to college, and sometimes had to go to school or my internship with my luggage or a jetlag. After I graduated I wanted to do a second study and although I was afraid to lose motivation for school I decided to take advantage of the opportunities and got into fulltime modelling. I wanted to go to several countries but got a lot of bookings in Germany (which is good too of course) so I (only) went to London and Cape Town. After a year I decided to study again, because I got bigger ambitions and am quite a nerd too.
What’s going through your mind when you’re modeling in front of the camera?
When I first started I always wanted to be creative with my posing. Now I probably repeat a lot as they might shoot from different angles. All goes so natural right now so sometimes if I got asked to do something again I even forgot what I was doing hahaha. I think it’s good to think as a make-up artist or stylist as well, and help sometimes before they even notice. I also try to think with the client and sometimes we shoot something a bit different than the actual idea which can be even better, or more ‘’me’’.
What’s your favorite/least favorite thing about being a model?
My favorite part is how it helped me grow as a person. It got me more mature, open and independent. I also love the travelling although it can be very exhausting. Unfortunately you most often don’t have time to explore the places yourself but I feel blessed to be able to still see the world through modelling. My least favorite part is the waiting although you learn to be really good at it. I always say waiting is my profession, haha.
Are there any other models in the industry that you look up to?
Not really, I will never look up to someone because of what they have achieved. Just people with a great heart…
How would you define your personal style?
Just casual, sometimes a bit edgy. I wish I could walk in heels all day… if it they would make me more elegant but not even taller. I don’t wear them on a regular day but also not even while clubbing because then I will be much taller than my friends or guys…
And what are some of the heroes of your wardrobe?
My mom was once given old clothes by a friend to sell at a flea market. We found this really small and soft men’s shirt, which I have worn so often it’s so old now… I actually got to throw it away. When I was younger I bought some really exclusive sneakers which I don’t wear anymore but are still my little treasures.
Could you give us your best beauty and exercise tip(s)?
Eat healthy! It’s all in our nutrition.
Don’t do diets, just find a good balance. I once been to a nutrition consultant and I now also try to follow hormone balances with everything I eat.
With my hair and skin products I try to use the most natural products without harsh ingredients.
When it comes to beauty I got some good tips given by make-up artists:
– Use vitamin E oil. Because I’m light skinned I got scars really quick, this helps fade the scarring and also is anti-aging.
– Use waterproof mascara. I got so many curls but really straight eyelashes, therefor you should use waterproof mascara after you curled them, to keep the hold. Regular curling mascara’s don’t work if you have straight eyelashes. You can easily remove it with an oil.
What is the one beauty product you can’t live without?
I couldn’t live without my leave in conditioner from Cantu with sheabutter. It helps to get more structure in my curls.
Also couldn’t live without my waterproof mascara, Lancôme doll eyes is my absolute favorite!
What is your favorite city and where do you like to hang out there?
Although I love Barcelona, London and Cape Town I stick with Amsterdam. Nothing beats my city with all those pretty canals and little terraces. I like to keep discovering new places.
But my favorite places are Hannekes Boom and Waterkant for drinks at the quayside. Lunch at Lavinia Good food or Coffee and coconuts and clubbing at Jimmy woo, Paradiso or Bitterzoet.
What do you believe is the key to success for a model? What qualities does one need to succeed?
Don’t take things too personal. You as a model is just a role you play. And also don’t get upset if you didn’t book a shoot. And you must be able to work long days without complaining or be really patient cause of all the waiting.
What do you think MODELLIST-ID can do for the model community?
I think it’s great for the social part, especially if you are in a different country.
Also we could share tips as we all work in the same industry and face the same struggles.
What are your working on right now and what are your future aspirations?
Right now I’m studying Marketing. For me it’s not just because of that piece of paper, I actual like studying. After (or maybe even while…) I’d like to start my own business as I have many ideas, but I would also like to do marketing for a Fashion Brand or continue in online marketing (cause of my previous work experience). I’d like to keep doing modelling for as long as I could but my study has my priority.
