Cocktail Hour

As it is Thanksgiving in the USA today, I’ve flown to the Big Apple to spend the holiday with the family. Thanksgiving is such a stunning holiday because it asks us to focus on what we are thankful for, to focus on the goodness in our lives right now. This, in our consumer driven society, we can easily forget about. We should enjoy what we have and be happy.

I’m visiting my sisters who live in New York. My parents have flown over from California and we are about to celebrate our first Thanksgiving together as a family for 6 years. A ridiculously long time but with all of us spread globally, Christmas has always taken precedent.

There aren’t any little ones in our family at the moment so there are no ‘guilts’ in kicking off Thanksgiving with a cocktail hour. Besides being born out of prohibition, cocktail hour lives deep in New York’s character. So to celebrate our Thanksgiving in NYC I wanted to come up with a cocktail that we could indulge in and combine flavours that reflect my impressions of this fantastic city. As a health nut, I should say my cocktail of choice is a vodka, fresh lime and soda but would be a flat out lie. If I’m going to have a cocktail, its normally a Moscow mule. So with those flavours in mind;

Big Apple and Ginger Highball

  • 2 parts vodka
  • 1 part apple juice
  • 2 parts ginger beer
  • Squeeze of lime

Garnish with thinly sliced apple.

Make sure everything is ice cold, even chill your glass. Mix and serve.

Sip, sip, slurp.
