Chiltern Firehouse, London

A Place For Beautiful People

André Balazs’ new London baby is a beautiful place for beautiful people. There’s no irony lost either when you say that  the former firehouse in Marylebone is currently, quite literally, London’s hottest tablet; Balazs’ formula for creating full-on destinations hasn’t gone awry here. From the man who gave the world (and Lindsay Lohan) Chateau Marmont, we wouldn’t expect anything less than a perfectly-pitched atmosphere, immaculate service, dapper doormen and the type of sceney diners that are essential for any Balazs venture.

Nuno Mendes is ensconced in the kitchen, serving artful plates of fried chicken, crab donuts, caesar salads and cracking rib-eyes to those who pass the scrupulous screening test. Like any self-respecting new restaurant, there are of course lots of low-hanging filament lightbulbs and the prerequisite open-kitchen, but the design is the kind of tasteful blend of old features and contemporary cool that is indicative of the area’s changing outlook.

And if you can’t get a table, which may be likely (it’s best to be brutally honest here) at the very least you can enjoy the gothic redbrick architecture from the curbside…
