Bara Holotova: From Nada To Prada – By Fashion Model Jenny Bahn

August 22, 2014 by Jenny Bahn

In our ongoing series, From Nada to Prada, we explore the transformative power of a hair switcheroo, as seen in the competitive world of Model Land, where an agency-mandated bang cut or a bleach job can make the difference between booking a Prada campaign or slaving away in the gray ether of e-commerce for the rest of your livelong days.

Czech model Bara Holotova has one of those faces that you don’t have to do anything to—there’s no need for much maintenance beyond maybe a smear of Chapstick and a flick of Maybelline. Her cheekbones do the talking. I mean, you could keep change in those gorgeous little hollows. Still fresh into her teens, Bara started off in 2007, a pretty little Lolita with a wicked pout and porcelain skin. If Anna Paquin, Behati Prinsloo, and Lara Stone had a baby (if only!), it would be Bara. And so our little supermodel/superactress hybrid has been doing the rounds for the last few years, switching up her hair like most people change their pants. Just because you don’t technically need to do anything with a face like that, doesn’t mean agencies aren’t going to want to bleach, chop, and shred your hair into the 8th dimension on the off chance you might finally book, you know, Prada.

Bara did well au natural, landing editorials in Dazed and Vogue China and W, in spreads shot by the likes of Craig McDean. I mean, I don’t even know if she had had a proper show season yet. Pretty impressive stuff. She fell off the grid for a couple years, with a gap in 2011 (maybe she had to finish high school?). She reappeared for the SS 2011 season in a bleached blonde moment that lasted, literally, a moment. Then it was back to brown.

But it was finally time for a grown-up chop with the start of the FW 2013 shows. A new boyish ‘do seemed to perfectly compliment to a face quickly becoming more adult since she started—fashionably gaunt, if you will. With the cut in place, it was back to blonde again for the first half of SS 2014 and then brown for the last half (poor girl!). Now, we have appeared to have reached a happy place at blonde and short, which gives her this sort of sexpot Euro January Jones thing that I think I can stand behind.

Verdict: Could be the winning Prada combo. Let’s see if it sticks.
