For many people, going to the gym is fun, because you get to meet other people and there is a sense of achievement once you have finished.
However, there are many people that love the idea of going to the gym but don’t have the motivation to keep going. These are usually some people that go in the new year, but eventually, stop after a few weeks. If you are one of these people, but you are determined to stick it out, then here are a few ways you can keep that motivation.
Remove Any Barriers
If you think about it, there are probably many reasons why you wouldn’t go to the gym. Anyone of those can be enough to make your stay at home instead of going out. It is important that you take a look at these barriers and try to neutralize them. For example, if you often miss the gym in the mornings because it’s too cold, then perhaps you can have your gym clothes ready to hop into. Perhaps you can also have a coffee maker that will brew your coffee before you get up. Time is often another barrier, with so many things going on, it can be easy to say you don’t have the time.To remedy this, plan your gym time into your day so that you cannot double book yourself.
Find a Gym Buddy
One of the reasons a lot of people don’t like the gym is because they don’t want to be there on their own. Even if you are working out with your headphones on, it is sometimes nice to have a break and a chat with a friend before you start again. That is why finding a gym buddy can be the best way to keep you motivated. It works in two ways, one, you won’t be on your own, and two, you won’t want to let your buddy down by deciding not to go. Find someone that you get along well with and ask them if they want to help you get fitter by going to the gym. You might be surprised at how many people are in the same situation as you.
Choose a Gym You Like
If you are going to be paying to go to the gym, you want to choose one that you like. Look around the local gyms and see what type of facilities they have. There may be something in particular that you want such as a pool, so this could be a big reason for choosing a particular gym. In terms of equipment, most gyms will have a wide range of exercise machines. These can also be independently bought from companies such as Global Fitness. The gym will usually give you a tour and show you how to use them. Use the money you are spending on the gym as another motivation technique. Tell yourself that this money you are spending will be wasted if you don’t go regularly. You also don’t want to have to travel too far to reach your gym, especially if taking public transport. The added hassle of waiting for a bus or train will give you another excuse not to go.
Keep Track of Your Progress
One of the biggest motivation killers is a lack of progress. It can happen with diets as well as training because you feel as though you aren’t getting anywhere. You shouldn’t just rely on how you look or feel as this can be misleading. Instead, keep track of your weight and fitness each week by writing down your weight or uploading it to a fitness app. Seeing how much weight you have lost will be good motivation for you, along with how you are feeling at the gym. Try to up your reps each time you do weights or try running for a couple of minutes more on the treadmill. If you can do those, it will start to improve your fitness and show you how much better you are getting.
Set Yourself Realistic Goals
When you first decide to go to the gym, you will no doubt have some idea of what you want at the end. It might be that you want to build muscle, or that you want to tone your body. Whatever the reason is, it has to be an achievable goal within the timeframe you set. For example, losing three stones in weight is going to take you some time, so don’t set yourself a goal of a month. If you do, and you don’t achieve your goal, it will make you lose motivation, and you might even stop going to the gym altogether. Set yourself easy targets at first that will boost your confidence and your motivation. You can always reset them if they get too easy to achieve. You can also have a larger goal in mind by way of a reward. For example, your goal can be a holiday somewhere so that you can show off your new look.
Don’t Forget to Reward Yourself
If you enjoy going to the gym, then this can be enough of a reward in itself. However, for those who don’t like the gym, you may need to give yourself a little reward every so often. It might be that you promise yourself some relaxation time or a small dessert at the end of the week. You can also do this if you reach your weight targets as this will be another struggle that you need to endure. While not achieving your goal might make you feel down, don’t be too harsh on yourself. You need to remind yourself that you can achieve it next week instead.
How you choose to stay motivated is up to you. Only you know what it will take to keep you going to the gym. However, these ideas can help you to be more focused on your goals and hopefully give you the motivation to continue until you reach your ultimate goal.
