Sass & Bide
What love of vintage clothing and markets can result in is of incredible value, coming from a label founded by two Aussie ladies Heidi Middleton and Sarah-Jane Clarke. I fell in love with this brand while living in Sydney in 2006 for modeling. I got booked for a video shoot for this amazing brand for a couple days, which was no doubt an unforgettable experience. We drove around in a camper and traveled through the forests and also shot close to the see a little bit outside of Sydney. The shoot went exactly in the same style as the brand, ‘out of control’, ‘out of ordinary’. We went shooting with a total of 3 models, 1 photographer, 1 assistant, 2 stylists, and 1 makeup artist, all very nice and creative. I also remember that every outfit we (the models) worn was an item we asked the stylist to set apart for us, so we could actually order it for ourselves (I have spent quite a bit (..) on Sass & Bide outfits and still wear them today). The crazy director/photographer made us do all these impossible movements on the beach, run through the forest during the night with flaming torches. No doubt that the result of the shoot was totally the ‘Sass & Bide’ look and feel…I will not get into the details but we managed to shoot even till the sun almost came up again the next morning, having a great time amongst each other. This shoot was an experience and out of ordinary, a shoot that couldn’t be copied very easily you could definitely state…
Shoot in Sydney, Celine with Sass & Bide clothing in the Cosmopolitan
I was able to pick up all the clothes of Sass & Bide in their amazing store at 132 Oxford Street. I had a budget to spend since we made a deal that part of the shoot was paid in cash and part was paid in clothing, a deal my agency and I agreed on because of the unique collection. I remember that the staff in the store was very friendly and were giving the best styling advice. So if you are in Sydney, make sure you visit this store and buy yourself a great collection of this exclusive brand. It will be more than worth it!
A little bit about the history of Sass & Bide
The ladies commenced their partnership by modifying jeans purchased from retail outlets and cutting them to their own preference and sold them in a stall on London’s Portobello Road Market. The name Sass & Bide derives from Clarke (Sass) and Middleton (Bide). They have met each other in secondary school in Queensland, but first followed different paths. Clarke studied to be an accountant, while Middleton studied Art prior to becoming an art director.
After their success in the London markets, the ladies returned to Australia, Sydney where they developed an underground following that led to their first seasonal collection at Mercedes Australian Fashion Week, subsequent followed by fashion shows during New York Fashion Week and eventually they became a huge success worldwide.
