Tell us about your career as a model. How did you get started?
It all started when I was scouted on my family farm in Namibia, in the middle of the dessert, 600 kilometers from the nearest town. An agent who worked at the top agency, Boss Models, was on holiday with her family and stopped by our farm. When she asked me if I’ve ever thought about modeling, I looked up at her from the sand where I was sitting (making mud cakes of course) and gave her a very confused look. She gave me her email address and a month later I thought, why not! Ever since then, I was part time modeling whilst I was finishing school. After I finished school I traveled to Paris where I was working half of the year. What an experience! I’m still modeling full time and traveling the world, going onwards and upwards!
When did you first sign with an agency and what was that like?
I first signed with an agency in South Africa when I was 16, in 2014. I never thought that I’d pursue modeling as a career so I was very excited. To be honest, I never thought that would happen so I was (and still am) very proud of myself.
What is one of your favorite photographs from your career so far? Who shot it?
My favorite photo, so far, was shot by Sagar Manjarres. It’s a natural, raw picture, I was swimming or the shot and he took the shot as I came out of the pool. No makeup, no hair, no styling, just natural skills by Sagar.
What is your best or funniest model experience ever?
There have been many fun times on set and so many memorable moments, too many to document. It’s always the best shoot when you work with your friends!
What are the main challenges in modeling today?
Keeping your head on right! There are so many outside influences that take the focus away from what modeling is really about. We have to focus on our Instagram accounts, our image outside of the studio and standing strong, not letting people walk all over you because you are ‘just the model’ (Just to name a few).
What do you enjoy most of your profession?
The food on set! I’ve had some delicious meals behind the scenes. I also enjoy meeting new people in the industry and learning more about them and their careers, always learning something new. I’ve also seen the most beautiful locations while shooting all over the world, which makes me love my job even more!
How do you cope with all the competition in the modeling industry?
There is only competition if you compare yourself to other people. Everyone is beautiful and amazing in their own ways and as long as you remember that, you will always win the so called ‘competition’.
Do you think models are able to find long lasting friendships within the industry today?
There are many genuine, friendly, loyal, caring girls in the industry, so yes, it is possible. But there is also the other cat-fight, competition, rude side to it all. As long as you look after yourself, make yourself happy and stand strong, you will attract the right people to be your friends. It is special to have a friend in the industry, especially during tough times. They will always understand what you are going through and will be there for support. Hold on to those friends!!
What is your big model dream?
My big model dream is to work for Victoria’s Secret. (I’m already a natural angel 😉 ). As long as I’m happy, healthy and working, I’m already living the dream!
What is your favorite thing to do when not working?
When I’m in South Africa, I like to spend most of my time, when I’m not working, with my family and with my boyfriend and his family. I love going to Clifton beach to put my toes in the sand. I’m an avid reader so I always enjoy a good book. Most of the time I also just enjoy cooking or relaxing at home in my PJ’s, catching up on some series.
Take us through a typical day in the life of Anna.
I wake up. I head to the shower, to not only wash myself but also for the daily sing-off. I have muesli and yogurt for breakfast with a strong cup of tea (milk, no sugar). I get dressed, normally slipping on my ripped jeans and a t-shirt, kiss my boyfriend goodbye and off I go to whatever job/castings I have for the day, grabbing a coffee on my way. Castings normally require a lot of waiting around, so I’m sure to always carry a good book with me. After work, I head home, excited for dinner and a good chill. I have dinner and at 9 I get ready for the daily ‘Love Island’ show (ridiculous, I know). I always make sure to go to bed with a clean face and brushed teeth. And then I’m off to la la land.
What is your favorite exercise for working out?
Oh dear. I’m not the biggest fan of exercising, so I’ve got to keep it exciting by doing fun things like going for hikes, dance classes, yoga, and boxing.
We saw you just moved into your apartment. What’s the best thing about living in London?
I LOVE LONDON! There are many great things about London. I love using the public transport (I know that sounds crazy), it’s so easy and convenient. Besides, in Cape Town we don’t really use public transport, so every bus ride is like a mini adventure. Most people are extremely friendly and very helpful, you don’t get that everywhere. There are also so many little restaurants/parks/bars/shops to discover, the fun around the corner is never ending!
And do you have a special hotspot you would recommend us?
Restaurant Ours has a great vibe and is stunning inside, also perfect for some drinks. My boyfriend and I love going to Flat iron for a medium rare steak and quick service, they also have the best-creamed spinach in town! Last, but not least… The Golden Dragon in China Town is amazing for dim sum and Chinese tea.
