First off tell us how you were discovered and how your modeling career all started?
I found myself finishing my last year of my bachelor degree at the Interamerican University of Puerto Rico. I was very involved in the field of science as my major was in Biomedical Science (Pre-medicine). I remember it was summer 2012, and I was doing some research in biofuel as part of my extracurricular work, a requirement in order to apply to medical school. I went to a summer music festival with a couple friends and the party mode was on; we properly celebrated the summer holidays after classes finished (can’t forget an experience like that lol).
I remember we were taking pictures all over with everyone enjoying the good vibe, but somehow one of those pictures got posted on Facebook, (by the way I was rocking in a music festival, so you can imagine the photos, it wasn’t the best one lol.) And that’s how a talent scout named by Jorge Augusto, owner of the agency Likuid Models in Puerto Rico, got his eyes on me. Just a few days after that music festival I got a random call from this person that I never met or heard from before, but somehow he found my number. He was very brief and straight on what he wanted to tell me and propose. The idea of modeling and starting with another career never crossed my mind, it was like “are you freaking serious”. I was like ‘no man I think you contacted the wrong person’. But at the end he convinced me, and said “let’s do a test shoot with no strings attached to see how it goes and how you feel about this new idea and adventure”. At the end of the conversation he said that the shoot would be in one month, so I had to make sure to get my body ready and in a better shape.
After that first test shoot the rest is history. Right after, I started doing editorials, runways, TV commercial, movie projects, pretty much everything you are able to do in the entertainment industry in Puerto Rico in a period of six months. The desire to do more and work on more things, got me very motivated and I just wanted do my best cause I knew I could. Sometimes it works in that way, you are talented in something but you never knew until you try it. They said you can do whatever you want in life, so I just make it happen. Being born and raised on an island you know that at some point if you are an ambitious person, you gotta make the hard decisions to take your future to the next level in life. I made my decision and a week after I finished my college degree I moved to Los Angeles with my girlfriend and a couple hundred dollars in my pocket. Enough to survive and see what’s next lol.
What’s one of the most interesting shoots that you’ve done?
I remember a couple years ago in Los Angeles I was offered to shoot for the website of Vogue Italy. And that was such great news and sounded so big for me as I was still learning about the industry. One thing they wanted me to do was shave my head “buzzcut”, second thing I had to be fully naked in the shoot for the first time. Not an easy decision at all lol. But I said yes why not, and the next day we did the shooting, it was with two other model girls.
Do you ever get shy in front of the camera?
Actually it’s something that everyone experiences at least once. But I had no problem facing the camera and show who I really am. It’s all about confidence.
Tell us a bit about your mother agency and what you like most about them.
Where to start… lol. It’s that person that you know is very excited and happy to have you as part of the team, cause she believes in you as much as you believe in yourself. What I like the most that I know that my international manager (Claudia Stanzani) will push as much as she can to get me wherever I am supposed to be in place and work. And that makes me happy.
What are the main challenges in modeling today?
I believe the main challenge has always been to keep being yourself and not to pretend to be someone else. Bring your personality no matter what, the competition is huge but one thing you have to do is focus on yourself and to always do the best you can.
What is your favorite thing to do when not working?
When I’m not modeling I just find something else to get myself busy with and I am always learning new things. Meditation and patience is key, so better do some physical activity and enjoy life.
Take us through a typical day in the life of Elvis.
My days are always unexpected as I’m bad at making plans lol. Can wake up and shower in the morning right before taking my coffee and heavy breakfast to start my day. I always try to catch up with friends throughout the day to see what’s happening. Usually I take at least 1-2 hours to workout, can be any kind of physical activity like gym, hiking, swimming or just going for a run to clear my mind and keep myself healthy. I love cooking so I make sure to prepare every single meal throughout the day, but of course that’s if I don’t end up going out with friends. Which is something really hard for me to say no to lol.
What is your favorite healthy snack?
A piece of chocolate always helps :).
What music are you into at the moment?
I listen to pretty much any kind of music, but one to pump me up is salsa or hip-hop. My favorites at the time.
What are your travel essentials?
I always carry at least two books, an iPad, headphones and a notebook. Can’t miss the hairspray though.
What’s your favorite place to hangout in Cape Town?
So far here in Cape Town ‘Caprice’ is a really nice place with a beach view, also ‘Chez’ club for some hip-hop and ‘Yours Truly’ is great because of the positive vibe.
Give us 5 facts about you people may not know.
I’m a scientist, I like gummy candies, I suffer of myopia, I’m obsessed with sneakers and one of my tattoos is a DNA chain that looks like a dragon with a life message.
What do you think MODELLIST-ID can do for the model community?
I believe that MODELLIST-ID brings opportunities and opens more doors by exposing you to everyone that is into the fashion industry and any other business related people. Giving the people a brief idea of who you really are and what you have done to get where you are at the time.
What’s next for you?
Next thing to do is keep traveling all around the world, keep shooting commercials and campaigns, spreading my voice and image all over to inspire others to follow their dreams. The future is unpredictable; I’m going with the flow just having a good time.
