Tell us about your career as model. How did you get started?
A friend of mine entered the Elite Model Look (2013) and I wanted to come to support her. The day before, my mom asked me if I didn’t want to join the contest. I thought about it and gave it a try. I made it to the finals in Amsterdam. Although I did not win, I did sign a contact, and I am still with Elite now!
When did you first sign with an agency and what was that like?
So I first signed with Elite Amsterdam after the contest, in 2013. I was only 14. It was crazy! I couldn’t believe Elite wanted to work with me!
What is one of your favorite photographs from your career so far? Who shot it?
One of my favorite photographs is this one;
This was in Paris, it was super cold outside but the photographers, Tomas Howard and Natalie Tusznio (they work together), made it super fun and made me forget about the cold.
What is your best model experience ever?
So far I thinkt that I am in Singapore right now. How many 17 year old girls can say they go to Singapore all by themselves for two months. I got to celebrate my 18th birthday here on top of the famous Marina Bay hotel. It was amazing!
What are the main challenges in modeling today?
I think the main challenges are that there are so many models now, so the competition is huge. And designers more often choose the already famous girls now. Think about Kendall Jenner, Gigi Hadid…. Makes it harder for the girls who start from nothing, to get to the top. But don’t get me wrong, I love Kendall & Gigi!!!
What do you enjoy most of your profession?
The thing I enjoy most is the traveling. It’s amazing that I get to travel to all these different places, at my age. In only 6 months, I’ve been to Paris, Milan and Singapore. I always enjoyed traveling and my dream was to travel around the world. And now I am able to.
How would you describe a model life?
I would describe it as fun, but hard. People always think that modelling work is super easy, but it’s not. We have to eat healthy, we have to exercise. Keeping in shape isn’t that easy. Especially if you have a weakness for food that has a lot of calories in it… haha. We cannot always do the things our friends can do. But it’s not all hard. To be able to travel, meet new people, experience new things, is just amazing. Modeling makes you stronger as a person. You get a lot of no’s, and if you can’t handle that, it can get to you really fast.
Do you think models are able to find long lasting friendships within the industry today?
I surely think so, yes! I’ve made some really good friends, and I am still in touch with them.
Were you on the runway during Fashion Week this year? If yes, where and for which designer?
Unfortunately not this year due to a knee injury. But last year I was in Paris for Dorhout Mees.
What is your favorite thing to do when not working?
When I’m abroad, my favorite thing is to visit the beautiful places that the city has to offer! I love to discover new places. When I’m at home, hanging out with my friends and going to music festivals.
Take us through a typical day in the life of Sidney.
A typical day of Sidney…It depends on whether I have castings to go to, or a job, or a day off. Waking up never gets easy, so I always take my time for that. Have breakfast, do the things I have to do and in the evening unwind by watching Netflix or get together with friends and have fun. And of course exercise as much as I can.
How do you keep your body in good shape?
Everyday I try to eat as healthy as I can. I powerwalk a lot, and work on my abs. When I am at home, I usually train with Modelsinshape, that’s a personal trainer who really knows how to train for a model’s body.
What’s your favorite place in the world?
My favorite place in the world has to be…. home (Amsterdam).
Give us 5 fun facts people might not know about you yet.
I am the joker at home, love to make people laugh, can also be really shy, put other people’s feelings before mine, love to sleep.
