She has just started her modeling career, but when you look at her beautiful pictures, it looks like she’s doing it for years.. We’re talking about one of our newest members, Isa Straver. She tells us more about how she got discovered and some fun facts we didn’t know about her yet!
Agencies: Human Models , Jill models
Milestones: I just started modeling. First I had to build my portfolio and get the right sizes. Now I signed with my first foreign agency and get published in a magazine (Ellements magazine).
Current location: At home, in the Netherlands
First off tell us how you were discovered and how your modeling career all started?
When I was younger I was often told, that I should do modeling. But because I was busy playing football and building tree houses with my three brothers, I was not interesting in it yet. At the age of fourteen I came in contact with a photographer, who also told me I should work as a model. At this point I became interested and visited Human Models. I immediately had a good feeling and the same day I had my first casting. This was so cool and I signed up with them.
What’s one of the most interesting shoots that you’ve done?
An editorial for designer Judith van Vliet. The outfits in the sustainable collection ‘raw materials’ all contains one raw material as cotton, polyester, wool and silk. My favourite outfit was the one with a top made of a cotton plant. Also it was very fun to do the shoot with Madieke, another girl from my agency!
Please tell us a bit about your mother agency. Why would you recommend other models to join this agency?
My mother agency is Human Models . The agency is not very big, so every model get personal guidance from the owner Sarah. Sarah has also done modeling work in the past. Because of her experience she has a good network in the fashion industry. I can always call her when I have questions and she gives me a lot of tips and tricks
What are the main challenges in modeling today?
To keep believing in yourself. When you compare yourself to other people, you can get insecure. Everyone is unique and sometimes I have to remember that. Having your own personality is so important. Also you have to deal with rejections and criticism.
How do you combine modeling with school?
For me it is not very hard to combine modeling with school. I try to pay as much attention in lessons as I can, so I have more time at home to sport and prepare meals. Sometimes, when it is busy, I have to skip things to learn.
Do you ever get shy in front of the camera?
The first times I had a shoot, I did not know what to expect and I was a bit nervous. Now standing in front of the camera gives me only an exciting feeling. Shooting is something that makes me happy. After the shoot I am always looking forwards to see the results.
You could have anyone take your portrait, who is it and why?
Mario Testino. In my bedroom I have a collage made with some cool pages from an old Vogue The Book. The collage exists for the half from pictures of Kate Moss, made by Mario Testino. The pictures are edgy and strong. I love his style of photography so much!
What part of modelling do you like the most and why?
To create something with a team inspires me, because it’s always different. Meeting new people is something I also love. By every shoot, casting and show you meet new people.
What gets you out of bed in the morning?
Breakfast!! Every day I get up quite early, so I have time for my breakfast. It’s my favorite meal of the day and also the part of the day I can relax most and just enjoy all the good food;)
What is your favorite healthy snack?
Bellpepper (not the green one btw) dipped in some hummus. Quite funny this is my favorite snack now, because a year ago I thought hummus was disgusting. When I’m more in the mood for something sweet, I mostly take a date , hand of mulberries or some raisins.
What’s your beauty regimen like? Any secrets?
Actually I’m not using any products for my skin. For a healthy skin I try to avoid greasy food and food with much sugar. In my free time I almost don’t wear any make-up. After a modeling job, I always remove my make-up with biological coconut oil.
Give us 5 fun facts about you people may not know.
1.I always eat my scrambled eggs with cinnamon
2. I still haven’t found a horror movie, which I think is scary. Any tips maybe?
3. I have played football till I was at the age of 12
4. I’m the worst singer you can imagine (even my mother says so..)
5. French is my favorite language
What do you think MODELLIST-ID can do for the model community?
A lot! For models MODELLIST-ID can be very handful. We can get tips and inspiration from it. For example sometimes I haven’t got inspiration for a healthy meal. So I’m searching a lot on the internet for new recipes. On modellist-id I can get some new inspiration!
Do you have any model friend you would like to see presented on Modellist-ID?
Madieke Jansen! We did some cool shoots together and became friends. You should check her out, her photos are amazing!
What do you want to achieve in the future?
In the near future I would love to meet more people in the fashion industry and make beautiful creatures together. My dream is to do a shoot for Saint Laurent Paris. The last campaign is so cool! The clothes are inspired by the 80’s fashion with a punky attitude. I love it! It’s photographed in Paris, the city I would love to live part of my life. The collection is edgy and the team is great which makes every picture amazing.
