“Embrace your own body, everybody has flaws”. Gorgeous Elise Jade Burgess about the most challenging part of the modeling business and how happy she is with her agencies…
Agencies: De Boekers, Uniko Barcelona
Milestones: Bershka, Pull & Bear and G-STAR
Current location: Holland
How did you get discovered?
I was visiting an event in Amsterdam when Mariana Verkerk asked me to join the Modelconvention. I went to this convention with no intention and got 4 callbacks. 1 was from Tokio, where Bianca Toeps (photographer) worked for at that time. We did a shoot together and she sent my pictures to my current agency, De Boekers.
What do you enjoy most about your profession?
Going to all the different places, and working with different people all the time. Also seeing the results in magazines or posters is still unreal.
What do you find the most challenging part about working in the fashion industry?
I think when you do a lot of castings and you keep getting rejected it makes you a bit insecure. I’m a little bit shorter, and more curved then most of the girls and when you keep seeing Instagram posts like Romee Strijd it gives you the feeling you need to loose weight, but I think you should embrace your own body, everybody has flaws.
Tell us a bit more about your agencies UNIKO (Barcelona) and de Boekers (Amsterdam) and what do you like most about these agencies.
De Boekers is a great agency, they don’t push you too hard and that’s what I like the most. Sometimes I see agencies pushing young girls way to far, and I’m happy they don’t work that way. Also both of the agencies understand that I want to go to school which is great.
How do you deal with all the traveling required to be a model? Any tips on how to cure a jet-lag?
I don’t travel a lot because I’m going to school now, but I used to travel when I was doing the job fulltime. When I worked for Pull & Bear they used to fly me in for a couple of days, I had a room with a bath which is so relaxing, and after the job I used to order room service. Also when I work in Barcelona I like to meet Dutchies who are also there for modelling.
Where is your favorite place to travel?
Spain, I love the people over there. Also I love New York, where I went for the casting of Marc Jacobs. I got picked out over 200,000 girls and they let me fly to New York to do the casting. Unfortunately they didn’t choose me once I was there but I had a lot of free time.
If you weren’t a model, what would you want to do?
I have no idea, still trying to figure that one out.
How do you stay in shape?
I do a lot of boxing combined with pilates, I try to eat healthy but I’m not good at this to be honest. I try to eat a lot of fruit, and keep away from snacks. I work out everyday at the gym.
Do you have any beauty secrets?
I sleep a lot. I always want to sleep at least 7 hours otherwise I’m moody. Also I use a lot of day creme to keep my skin hydrated. I’m a huge fan of Elizabeth Arden.
What do you do in your downtime?
I actually just started school and I’m really enjoying this. I’m studying mediamanagement at Grafisch Lyceum Rotterdam.
Do you have any advice for those who want to start modeling?
Don’t push yourself too hard, and when someone says no don’t take this personally. Every top model got rejected a few times before breaking through.
What do you think MODELLIST-ID can do for the model community?
I think it is a great way to keep in contact with other models and read about their adventures.
What are your working on right now and what are your future aspirations?
I’m now focusing on school, but I want to keep modelling for as long as possible. Also I created my own website which is exciting.
