After this super fun interview with model Crystal Gayle, we really got to know her better. And you probably won’t believe how many countries she has visited the last 24 years!
Profession: Full-time model, make-up artist, and student.
Agencies: Base Model Agency (Cape Town)
Milestones: Traveling to the United Kingdom
Current location: Cape Town
Tell us about your career as a model. How did you get started?
I grew up watching Americas Next Top Model and Scouted and was completely enthralled in the possibility of something so exciting happening to me. I moved from Johannesburg to Cape Town and was scouted by Fanie Nel which led me to sign with my first Agency.
When did you first sign with an agency and what was that like?
I had some idea of what I was getting myself into and found it fairly easy to communicate back and forth with the Agencies team. Knowing Cape Town well enough by this point I was able to navigate my way through the city from casting to casting which I looked forward to and eagerly attended.
What is one of your favorite photographs from your career so far? Who shot it?
The picture below, shot by photographer Malte Braun.
What is your best model experience ever?
Shooting a Marie Claire Editorial with Photographer Steve Tanchel. The team was absolutely fantastic and super efficient. Marie Claire had me in full on ‘Kill Bill’, Oriental style Designer garments and the story was shot inside a massive, vibrantly colored hot air balloon. I Felt as though I were at the core of a different world, it was beautiful and the energy is something I won’t likely ever forget.
What are the main challenges in modeling today?
The main challenge for me personally would be social media, marketing and essentially creating a brand for yourself. Instagram is basically the leading and most powerful tool we have as models and if we lack the knowledge as how to use this tool we are only setting ourselves up for nothing. Followers and being interactive daily can become frustrating especially when you have more than just a modeling career on the go at the same time…
What do you enjoy most of your profession?
I like having the opportunity to travel and to meet new people within the industry. I have to admit that despite ‘Free Test Shoots’ being cool and all, I thoroughly enjoy planning and executing my own shoots. I am grateful for having a strong and effective team at Base Model Agency behind me and on the daily, I simply just love getting ready for castings.
How would you describe a model life?
The good always comes with the bad and there are always going to be disappointments as well as joy in your career as a model but if your heart and head are in the right place you will have the courage to take the industry by its horns day by day until you get it your way.
Do you think models are able to find long lasting friendships within the industry today?
I think that if you can stay true to yourself, have some sense of morale, discipline, and loyalty you can maintain any kind of friendship in any industry.
What is your big model dream?
I think our dreams as models all come down to one thing and for me, that is to grace as many international fashion magazine covers as I can.
What is your favorite thing to do when not working?
I love to explore new places, I like to try new restaurants and take walks on our beautiful promenade. Shopping lol. Shopping is a thing I am most grateful and most privileged for, I think everyone gets a buzz when they are set loose in a mall lol but most importantly I spend time with my friends and family as often as I can and we’re all really cool people that share a lot of love for each other.
Take us through a typical day in the life of Crystal.
Well firstly I wake up fairly early and by fairly early I’m talking 5 am. I then make myself a cup of good old fashion South African Rooibos tea with a slice of lemon. I then get out my yoga mat and do my morning Yoga routine followed by 30 minutes bodyweight training just to get myself a little amped whilst everyone else is still asleep. I am taking three courses all in one shot, Firstly a Business Management Course through UCT, Secondly a Social Media and Marketing course through UCT and Thirdly an Interior Design course. I’m obsessed with the finer more beautiful things in life and one day I will be the one creating these structured and aesthetically mind-blowing spaces. So I typically spend 5/12 hours a day on my studies and the rest is set aside for castings and general play.
How do you keep your body in good shape?
Firstly I want to thank my beautiful mother for the gift of my body. Secondly, I just do it the same way everyone else does or should be doing it. I stay clear of alcohol, I eat the right foods and I move more than standing idle. I’m just a highly energetic and effective human being.
What’s your favorite place in the world?
The Swiss Alps. My father is a Swiss National and I’ve traveled Europe extensively with him. For my father, it’s main business but for me, it’s a free explore ticket lol.
