Beautiful model and fashionista Roxy Horner tells us about her career, fashion style and some fun facts about herself.
Agencies: Premier, UK/Two Models, LA/Metropolitan, Paris
Current location: London
Tell us about your career as a model. How did you get started?
I was scouted a few times as a child, which planted the seed, but my parents waited until I was 13 to take me to an agency.
When did you first sign with an agency and what was that like?
When I was 13 I signed to my first agency, I didn’t really understand it all back then but it was definitely exciting.
What is one of your favorite photographs from your career so far? Who shot it?
I still really love a photo I shot in NYC with Jacob Dekat, it was for Prince and Jacobs then magazine called LoveCat but they have a new magazine now called Galore.
What do you think is the biggest misconception about models?
A lot of people think that models jobs are easy and glamorous but that’s definitely not the case! Don’t get me wrong I love my job but it really bugs me that people don’t realize that there’s a lot of hard work involved.
What are the main challenges in modeling today?
Modeling has changed so much over the years that I’ve been doing it. I would say one of the today’s biggest challenges is keeping on top of our social media. When I started out, being a model was about being versatile, about having something a bit different but also having the right height, right size, knowing to work the camera and all the angles and willing to dedicate every day and moment to a possible last minute job. Now, we’re always asked on our Instagram following before anything else! I guess now a model’s biggest challenge is promoting themselves through social media yet still keeping some mystery. It’s like having two jobs in one!
What is the funniest thing you have experienced during a shoot or job?
Well the other day I did a shoot in roller skates (I can’t skate) and it took forever to put them on, then I had to change my outfit, to save time I decided to try and change with the skates still on… well you can imagine how that turned out! I was all over the place holding on to anything I could, before realizing it was probably easier to just take them off.
How would you describe a model life?
I can imagine each model has such a different path in life because there are so many paths to go down, but overall I would describe it like a breathtaking roller coaster. I love the ups and downs, traveling, meeting new people, exploring new places trying new things. I miss my family and friends a lot but overall a model’s life is pretty awesome.
What is your big model dream?
I honestly feel like I have my model dream already. As with most people, I always want to push myself further. I’d love to get more campaigns, bigger and better ones but, if it all ended tomorrow I would be pretty happy with myself and what I’ve achieved.
What do you love doing when you’re not working?
I love being outdoors and being in nature, even if that’s just in the local park.
Take us through a typical day in the life of Roxy.
No two days are the same! If I’m shooting in Manchester for instance (which happens a lot) I would wake up at 4:30am get a car to the station, to get on the train for 6am get to the shoot for 9am, shoot anywhere between 30-60 outfits in a day, have a lunch break in between (the best part – I get to pick anything yummy I like) finish around 5/6pm catch the 6:30pm train back to London for 8:30pm then another train home. There’s normally a lot of traveling involved!
You have an amazing fashion style! What is your favorite outfit for a night out?
Thank you! I think it’s about keeping it simple, my go-to is a pair of high-waisted trousers with a crop top and heels but I change it up sometimes and go with a jumpsuit.
What are your favorite fashion and cosmetic brand and why?
I love this awesome shop in Paris called Colette, it has everything I love in it. Every time I’m there, I fall in love but I’ve just found out it’s closing forever in December…
What’s your favorite holiday destination?
So far my favorite place to visit has been Kauai, it’s one of the most beautiful peaceful islands in Hawaii.
Give us 5 fun facts people might not know about you yet.
Okay so I don’t know if these are fun but…
I go to planetariums and like learning about space.
I also believe in aliens.
I have 2 sisters one is a hair stylist the other is also a model.
I learned to draw with my toes before I could my hands – my mum had to correct me before it became a thing…
I went dancing, singing and acting classes for years and used to perform in small shows, sometimes when I shoot, it comes in handy.
What do you think MODELLIST-ID can do for the model community?
I think it’s great. We can go on there to keep up to date with where the local health, food and beauty places are. It gives us tips on all things from fashion to who’s our latest up and coming model. It’s also a good way for outsiders to get an insiders view on what it’s really like in the industry.
Do you have any model friend you would like to see presented on Modellist-ID?Absolutely! You should check out my friend Linnea Pihl from Sweden, not only is she a beautiful model but she also has a unique singing voice, she’s hilarious and has started her own show called “just model things” it’s based on the sad realities of an everyday model life and it has me in stitches!
