Tell us about your career as model. How did you get started?
About a year ago when I was still in high school I went with me school for a convention in Bloemfontein, South Africa for all the schools using my system in Africa. When I was there I’d just be normally sitting around or walking and random other kids would be like “oh are you a model because you look like you’re posing the whole time” or “are you a model because you walk like one” so after that I was like “hey let me give this modeling thing a shot. I still receive these “compliments”. After that I met Rowan who basically started me off into the modeling industry. All in all I’ve been modeling for about 8 months.

When did you first sign with an agency and what was that like?
Initial challenges I faced were since I was still in high school when I got signed it was hard for me to go to castings and meet clients since I still had to do school. I managed to fit my modeling “trips” into my holidays pretty well so I think it worked out all right obviously I’ve only been modeling for 8 months and doing it full time for around 2 months so I can’t say I’ve had any serious challenges yet.

To be honest when I first got signed with an agency it was a lot more relaxed then I expected. Of course I was excited but I didn’t think I would immediately be traveling the world and making loads of money.

What is one of your favorite photographs from your career so far? Who shot it?
My favorite photograph in my career so far has to be in the studio shoot I did with Marnus Meyer. It was my second proper shoot in my life but when I met Marnus I felt really relaxed and I think for that shoot, because of his great ability as a photographer, I was able to really express myself and kind of “show the camera what my personality is really like”

Please tell us a bit more about your mother agency.
Currently my mother agency is synergy Scouting and management. It’s run by Rowan Summers which makes it really good for me because of the relationship I have with him. He’s the one who managed to get me started I this industry and I know him personally and have worked with him so when we speak about issues regarding modeling or the industry we speak on a friend-to-friend basis and since he is also a model he can completely relate to me. It makes arrangements and suggestions so much easier and smoother.

What do you enjoy most of your profession?
What I really enjoy about this career choice besides the traveling or meeting new people is the feeling I get in front of the camera. Once we start shooting there’s just me and the camera and nothing else, this allows me to express myself in a way I don’t think most other models do. For me it’s not just “do this pose then this pose” it’s more about self expression instead of just doing the movements. Which is also why I’d love to get into acting because then I can take my self expression to a much higher level since I’ll be able to act and speak and show different emotions and reactions and not just stand in different ways.

What are the main challenges in modeling today?
To be honest I can’t really describe the model life as of yet since I’ve only been doing it full time for 2 months it has its ups and downs but I’d need more experience to answer that question properly.

Do you think models are able to find long lasting friendships within the industry today?
I’d say if you meet someone who you really connect with then keeping a lasting friendship isn’t an issue. However it can be a rather busy lifestyle so if you’re the type of person who needs constant communication it might be a little harder for you to keep a lasting friendship.

What is your favorite thing to do when not working?
I’m not gonna lie I’d rather work instead of relax but when I’m not working I love listening to music, reading, watching a good movie, and just relaxing with friends. I do enjoy exercising and going for a run or walk but I can only do that for a limited amount of time so I’m not sure if that counts.

Take us through a typical day in the life of David.
A typical David day: I’ll wake up then use the bathroom. Ill take a shower which isn’t too warm, this helps me wake up faster and clears my head. In the mornings I wash my face with a deep pore cleanser which helps remove any oils or sweat which have built up on my skin during the night, and use an exfoliating body scrub which removes any fine lines or wrinkles and then a separate body wash which helps tone the skin. After the shower I’ll use a moisturizer which keeps my skin soft and and “youthful”. After the shower I’ll get dressed and check my phone, usually my messages first to see if I’ve got any castings later in the day and my social media. I’ll eat my first meal at around 12 which is usually made up of eggs, vegetables and occasionally some carbs.
If I’ve got any castings during the day I’ll go to those but if not I like to read during the free time or be rather aimless on my phone. I workout later in the afternoon and afterwards I’ll have a big dinner which contains the majority of my carbs and veggies. After eating I’ll shower again and use a facial scrub to remove the sweat from my workout. Then I might watch a movie or have a small snack and go to bed unless I’ve got something planned for the evening.

How do you keep your body in good shape?
To keep my body in shape I exercise 5 days a week. I prefer to do calisthenics over lifting weights in the gym and I’ll run between 3 to 5 kilometers every other day. I usually do upper body one day and lower body the next and on the 5th day I’ll do a full body workout to focus on any lacking areas. I don’t go to crazy with my workout schedule either. If the day is really busy and I don’t have time to workout then I won’t sit around saying I’m out of shape because I’ve missed a day. Balance is key.

What’s your favorite place in the world?
My absolute favorite place in the world hands down, no questions asked is Dubai. Using words to describe that city doesn’t do it justice. You have to go there and see for yourself. It’s simply amazing.

What do you think MODELLIST-ID can do for the model community?
I think modellist-Id is a great platform for models to get their face out there. It’s also fantastic way for clients to get to know the models they work with and see all the options.
