With over 130.000 unique visitors to her blog, renskroes.com each month and over 300K Instagram followers, it’s no surprise that her cookbooks are all bestsellers.
Dutch food-writer phenomenon and sister of supermodel Doutzen Kroes, Rens truly proves that healthy and delicious eating doesn’t need to be complicated at all. An exclusive interview with a woman on a mission to make the world a healthier and happier place…
How would you describe your philosophy about food and living well?
Healthy eating, relaxation and exercise: those 3 pillars make up the triangle that applies to everyone I believe. Healthy eating plays a big role and my recipes are therefore based on unprocessed, whole foods that are delicious and nutritious and make the body happy.
What’s your favorite meal for?
– Breakfast: When I have time I like to make mango pancakes but I also love smoothies.
– Lunch: Big salads made with ingredients like lentils, quinoa, chickpeas and greens topped with a dressing of balsamic vinegar, olive oil and homemade mayonnaise, salt and pepper.
– Dinner: I love light dinners so I will go for soups, for example my celeriac soup that you can find in my Power Food cookbook.
– Snacks: Fruit and chocoball snacks.
Name a few things that are essential to have in your fridge.
Lemons, oat milk or other plant-based milks, apple vinegar and avocados.
What’s your secret ingredient?
Baking soda. Besides in recipes, you can also use it to make your own toothpaste or deodorant.
What’s your latest food/health obsession?
I don’t have obsessions; I always try to find a balance. When I have obsessions, I just let it go, I find ‘obsession’ a negative word. It is all about balance.
What I am focusing on right now is my skin. Since I becoming older I am more aware of what I put on my skin. I focus a lot on natural skincare and keeping my skin moist. For example when I have a photoshoot I eat a little less heavy a few days in advance to improve my skin.
Beauty comes from inside and out. Now that we’ve covered lots of food for a healthy body from the inside, what are your best beauty secrets for the outside?
As said in the previous questions using the right skincare is a must. I also use foods you can eat. It is important what you put on your skin is all-natural.
I love to put rose water on my face; I do this 3 times a day. Furthermore I use a good night and day serum.
As being the sister of Doutzen Kroes you know the importance of nutrition for models. Do you have any specific advice for models to stay in shape?
People think models workout all the time but I know a lot of models and of course they workout but they also make sure they relax and make sure they see their friends. Working out 2/4 times a week (not longer than 1 hour), eating healthy but also enjoying your social life is what works best.
There are so many young girls getting lost in clean, healthy eating, they become obsessed, which is so wrong. Finding balance is very important.
What are your favorite healthy hotspots in the fashion capitals?
I love to go to New York, Paris and London. One of my favorite places in New York is called Siggy’s Good Food. In Paris I love this cute place called Café Pinson and for things like plates, knives and forks I go to Merci. In London Camden Market is great, especially Inspiral.
What is your favorite part of developing your cookbooks?
Cooking of course and being creative with the team. I love to ask questions to my readers and ask them what they need. That is how my book ‘On the Go’ is created, because my readers where looking for more on the go lunch recipes.
The cover is black and white, which is never shown before with a cookbook. So I like to be creative in the kitchen but also with the whole developing part. This gives me so much energy.
You must be really busy. If there’s one thing you wish you could spend more time on, what would it be?
I do not blog as much as I want because of all the other things I do. So definitely more focus on the website would be something I‘d like to spend more time on.
What are 5 things people don’t know about you?
1. I also do eat unhealthy sometimes. I always tell people that if you want to eat something unhealthy, you should go for it as long as you don’t regret it afterwards. If you crave something and you have regrets after, than don’t eat it.
2. I sometimes workout without eating before. I eat directly after the workout. Most of the times I workout really early, about 7.30 in the morning.
3. I love to sing, I used to be a singer in a band.
4. I love to dance: I go to clubs and bars where you go dance and if I don’t feel like going out, I just dance at home!
5. I never eat in airplanes. I always bring my own food.
What mantra sums up the way you’re aspiring to live life these days?
Love and care for your body, always make 100% conscious choices.
Besides your cookbooks, if your dreams could come true, what would the future hold for you?
I would love to have a cooking channel, create more cookbooks and I want to help people to become more conscious about food and their health.
Furthermore, I would love to support small farmers worldwide and I would really like to create more awareness about food waste. We cannot feed all the humans in the world but we are throwing so much food away. I always am very aware about what I buy and what I need in order to make sure I do not waste too much food.
So where can everyone keep up with you to learn more (website/social media channels)?
