Famke Janssen model interview

Famke Janssen just started working as a model but knows exactly what it takes to become a professional. We got the chance to have a little chat with her.

Nationality: Dutch

Agencies: It’s me management

Milestones: Amsterdam Fashionweek

Current location: Netherlands

Tell us about your career as a model. How did you get started?
About one year ago I got scouted through Instagram. They sent me a message with the question if I would like to visit the agency to show myself. They gave me a contract and became my mother agency. I had to lose some weight and after that, I got my contract. I now am represented by It’s me management!

When did you first sign with an agency and what was that like?
As I mentioned, about one year ago I signed at It’s me management. I had to finish school, so last year I only did some shoots in the Netherlands to build up my portfolio. It was a dream come true to get signed at such a great agency. My bookers are very helping, kind and hardworking people. I could not wish for a better agency.

What is one of your favorite photographs from your career so far? Who shot it?
Actually, it is a shot a friend made of me 1/2 years ago. We went outside to do a little photoshoot for a schoolproject. When we walked home she said ‘I am curious about the result, I am not even sure if I made one great picture’. We had a look at the result and it turned out very well, there were like 10 awesome shots.

What is your best model experience ever?
I think there is not one best experience. It is just everything together that makes it the best. I love meeting all the inspiring people who all like the same things as I do. What I also think that is an amazing thing,is that I made some friends through modeling. We share the same interests, we always have something to talk about and even when we are not working we can do nice things together such as going to festivals or going out for dinner.

What are the main challenges in modeling today?
There is a huge amount of models all over the world, so you need to be very authentic and ofcourse you need to have a great personality. As a model you need to find something that makes you special and beautiful. Also social media is very important these days, so you have to keep your instagram, facebook and maybe youtube up to date. Bookers have a look at your instagram before they book you, and even sometimes they book the model with more followers than you.

What do you enjoy most of your profession?
The variety of it. Not one day is the same, so I never ever get bored. Every concept and every shoot or show is different than the other.. I also meet a lot of different people who share the same passion.

How would you describe a model life?
Hardworking life. You need to be very flexible and you always need to be on your best. You get the opportunity to get a lot of luxury (sometimes) and to see the world. But there is also a downside, like dirty appartments or jobs that are not so nice, or people that say things about you you may not like. And last but not least, you get refused a 100 times before you get booked a job. You need to have strength and never give up, so it is important to have patience. Great things take time, they say.

Do you think models are able to find long lasting friendships within the industry today?
Yes, I do! It is very nice to meet other models who experience kind of the same life. I can talk for hours with my model friends. It is hard to maintain the friendship if they travel a lot, but in my case, my model friends are not traveling a lot, because we are all just starting this journey.

What is your big model dream?
Uhmmm…. Hard question, haha! I have a lot of dreams. It would be awesome to  be on a cover, to maybe have one day my own designed collection in collaboration with another big brand and ofcourse to go to New York to work as a model in ‘the big apple’.

What is your favorite thing to do when not working?
It maybe sounds funny but I also like to be not always in front of the camera, but to be the photographer from time to time. I like to photograph friends or buildings and sometimes the beauty of nature.

Take us through a typical day in the life of Famke.
I am an early bird, so I get up and make my breakfast and do a little workout after, most of the days. And after that, it depends what my schedule is. Sometimes shoots, or a day spending with friends or parents.

How do you keep your body in good shape?
I do kickboxing a few times a week, which I love so much. It makes you forget everything you stressed about that day and you feel so satisfied after the training, I can’t even explain. I also try to walk a lot and I also do a lot of workouts to keep my body in shape.

What’s your favorite place in the world?
Everywhere my parents and friends are.

Give us 5 fun facts people might not know about you yet.
– I play the saxophone since I was a little kid.
– I love hiphop music
– I can be very girly but also very cool and boyish
– I am very bad at planning, that is why I love last-minute bookings
– My grandpa is Indonesian

What do you think MODELLIST-ID can do for the model community?
It is great to read about other models experiences, you can learn from that and you can also get to know the fashion-industry a little bit more by time.

Do you have any model friend you would like to see presented on Modellist-ID?
Roxy Krijgsman! She is signed at the same agency as I am and I have only met her once before, but the connection was already there from that time on! She is extremely beautiful and kind.. I hope we will experience a lot more together.
