Hallwylska Palace- An Extraordinary Time Capsule

November 3, 2011 by Modellist-ID

Just down the street from NK, and opposite the Berns hotel, you’ll find an extraordinary time capsule. The Hallwylska Palace was built between 1893 and 1898 and was the private home of Walther von Hallwyl, his wife Wilhelmina and their family. They were one of the wealthiest families in the city and their house was one of the first buildings to have electricity, running water and telephones. They were also great art collectors and when they died the house and its contents, including an abundance of silver and Dutch and Flemish art, were donated to the city. And that’s when time seemingly stopped inside the Palace. There are regular guided tours of the building in English offering a glimpse of how aristocratic life was lived in Stockholm at the start of the 20th century.
