Kungliga Dramatiska Teatern, commonly known as Dramaten, is Sweden’s National Theatre. It occupies a beautiful white marble building dating from 1908 on Nybroplan, and is built in Jugendstil, the Scandinavian version of Art Nouveau. This is the theatre that was, for many years, the artistic home of Ingmar Bergman while alumni from the acting school include Greta Garbo and Max von Sydow (the actor who played chess with Death in Bergman’s The Seventh Seal). These days productions range from the classics to contemporary Swedish and foreign dramas, including plays for children, though most performances are, of course, in Swedish.
