#Foodie. Yes, I am one of those people that gets excited from pictures of people’s food on Instagram.
Two weeks ago, I realized that all the Instagram photos of the food that I was ‘liking’ were taken at one and the same new restaurant in Soho: Chalk Point, run by Matt Levine and the Indiefork team. I had to taste this food! So I made a reservation to check it out.
Chalk Point is located on Broome Street, in the SoHo area of New York. The restaurant uses mainly local, sustainable and organic ingredients. There are also six vegan options on the menu. Michelin starred executive chef Joseph Isidori runs the kitchen. He has many admirers, as does the ceiling of the kitchen, which is created by Basquiat.
Owner Matt Levine came to check up on us during our dinner. I asked him about the Basqiat ceiling. His response: “Basquiat was such a creative influence in SoHo that I wanted to inspire my kitchen staff to be creative with the food too”
We ordered: the ‘Chopped Arctic char tartar’ (with tarragon, capers, lemon aioli & house-made potato chips), the ‘Roasted Heirloom Carrots’ (Feta, black truffle & lemon) and the ‘Smoked North Fork Duck Breast’ (Grilled spring onion, amarena cherry & chimichurri)
Our verdict: all phenomenal and Instagram worthy dishes. Don’t think that this is all; I didn’t even mention the desserts (butterscotch pudding with popcorn) and the cocktails yet!
* Must have cocktail: ‘Bunker’s Hill’.
(Stoli hot jalapeno, fresh pressed cucumber juice, fresh pressed lemon juice, freshly muddled mint, agave syrup)
After our dinner we went downstairs to check out The Handy liquor bar (read: drink more cocktails). The vintage piano bar has an impressive mixologist that can create pretty much any cocktail out there, while using freshly squeezed juices and garnishes straight out of the garden.
* Fun fact: On Sunday you can let your inner Beyoncé out at the fabulous Karaoke nights.
