We caught up with male model Chand Smith and he spilled the gossip on what he would like to change about the modeling industry, crazy photoshoots and the exercises you need to get in shape!
When we spoke in your previous interview, you were living in Istanbul and mentioned your plans for the future “I want to see more of the world and get back to the States a.s.a.p.!” How did that work out? What’s been going on since we last spoke?
I just got back in Stockholm from shooting a campaign in Greece. It was one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever visited. US is hopefully happening late summer.
You are also working as a personal trainer and nutritionist. With your first-hand experience, what do you think about the strict dietary/size restrictions many models face, often enforced by their agencies?
Personally, I have’nt experienced any restrictions what so ever. However, I know that I would not be able to work well in Paris or a similar market where the models are really skinny.
In the end, it’s up to you what you choose to do. I think it’s about finding what market works for you and your type.
Could you tell us a true and a false rumor about models and food?
It’s so different, some eat really healthy and some don’t care at all.
What are the exercises you would recommend to anyone to stay healthy and in basic shape?
Squats and deadlifts are my favorite in the gym. I think you should do cardio atleast 3 times a week to make your heart work.
What would you change about the modeling industry?
The ideal for male models. Today many in the industry are looking for the really skinny young guys. I would prefer to see a more mature look with a muscular body. Unfortunately that usually doesn’t fit the clothes, though.
What’s the weirdest / scariest / craziest thing you’ve encountered during a modeling job?
This one was pretty crazy, I’m sure it will be pretty awesome!
Do you ever get shy in front of the camera?
Never, I love my job and would not change it for anything.
What do you like about the agencies you’re represented by?
It’s like a family. Even though we are many models on the board, they still manage to build a strong relationship with us.
You’re quite active on your Instagram and social media, what does it bring you and do you think it’s important for one’s modeling career?
Today it’s super important. I would not do it if it was’nt for modeling. I am aware that casting directors and brands are scouting a lot through social media today. That might be the opening to a new job or agency, if you’re lucky.
What’s next up for you?
I have a lookbook next week which I’m really excited about, and also some e-commerce jobs.
