If there is one undeniable truth in this world, it is that ladies love their diamond rings.

Diamonds are a timeless classic and have been a hugely prized possession of ladies and men alike for centuries; it is truly amazing how a humble piece of carbon with its molecules arranged in neat stacks has become one of the world’s most revered and sought-after gemstones.

#1: A Diamond’s Shape
The diamond’s shape refers literally to its physical form and how it looks. Diamonds can be cut into all sorts of different shapes from the classic round to the elegant pear and gorgeous cushion; a diamond’s shape and cut are one of the most distinct and noticeable things about it.

When it comes to diamonds, the four Cs are what experts use to determine its value: carat, color, clarity, and cut. Most diamonds are shaped or cut into rounds or squared cushions, with the aforementioned shapes appearing every now and then in certain types of jewelry or bespoke pieces.

#2: What Is a Diamond’s Cut, Exactly?
When we talk about a diamond’s cut, we are referring to its angles and facets. These angles, their proportions and the number of them affect how light reflects off the stone. A diamond’s cut is more than just this, though, with diamond cuts being graded from ‘excellent’ (where light is reflected as strongly as possible) to ‘poor’ (where a lot of the light is lost out of the sides or bottom of the stone).
The best-cut diamonds will reflect as much light as possible out of the top of the crystal, thus giving it that intimidating shine and sparkle we all know about.

#3: Diamond Cuts and Engagement Rings
Unsurprisingly, the traditional round cut is the most popular for engagement rings as it is generally the most sparkly of all the diamond cuts due to the large number of facets it has. Round cuts are generally more expensive as they have a larger carat weight and are much harder to cut. Coming in second is the square cushion cut and, again, it has a large number of facets which gives it an outstanding sparkle. A square cut is often seen as the more modern alternative to the round cut and is virtually the same aside from the fact that it is square.

Finally, the emerald is the third-most popular engagement ring cut. The rectangular cut provides longer, more sustained flashes of light as opposed to a sparkle and is perfect for those who want something a little more subtle.
Diamonds are highly complex gemstones which, with the right pair of skilled hands, can be cut into all sorts of magnificent shapes. With a diamond, the more facets there are, the more it will shine and, the more it shines, the more it is worth. Diamonds are some of the most highly revered commodities on earth and, as the saying goes, diamonds are a girl’s best friend; it is easy to see why.
